Year 1

Welcome to Year One. This is where you can easily find information that is specific to your child’s learning.
  • A curriculum overview showing what your child will be learning across the year

  • Knowledge organisers for each topic

  • Any parent presentations that have been shared

Knowledge organisers are simple, child-friendly guides to the learning taking place in each topic. They help by:
  • Explaining what your child is learning

  • Showing the key knowledge they need to remember

  • Introducing important vocabulary that they will use and hear in class

  • Helping learning to build step by step across the year

 You might use them to:
  • Talk about new words and their meanings

  • Ask your child questions about what they are learning

  • Revisit key facts and ideas

  • Build confidence by helping your child feel prepared for lessons

Y1 Phonics Screening Test

The Phonics Screening Check will take place in the week beginning Monday 8 June 2026. Its purpose is to confirm that all children have learnt phonics decoding to an age-appropriate standard.

The check comprises 40 words, a mix of real and pseudo (alien) words,  is administered 1-to-1 by a familiar adult. Results help us identify pupils who may benefit from additional phonics support.

For more information about phonics teaching and how we prepare children at Hatchlands, please visit the phonics section on our website.
