Hatchlands Primary School provides a free walking bus every morning which departs from Donyngs Leisure Centre car park at 8:30am.
A walking bus is simply a group of school children walking to and/or from our school with parents or volunteers working alongside paid staff, one acting as the ‘driver’ who leads the way, and one at the rear, the ‘conductor’.

What are the benefits of a Walking Bus?
Parents and carers are encouraged to support us in promoting sustainability by participating in our Park n' stride initiative and parking at Donyngs and walking the last 10 minutes with their own child/ren.
We promote sustainable travel by recording the way children travel to school, scoring points for their class for active travel. An active journey is anything that includes physical activity - walking, cycling, scooting etc. Travelling by car, bus and rail is not classed as active unless you get out early and walk for at least ten minutes (this is Park & Stride).
We have a bike and scooter shelter outside the office where they can be safely stored during the school day.
Each year we help promote the benefits of sustainable travel by taking part in Walk to School Week.

Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling.
There are three Bikeability levels, each designed to improve cycling skills, no matter what is known already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees from the basics of balance and control, all the way to planning and making an independent journey on busier roads. Each year, Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils have the opportunity to take part in the training.
Year 3 take part in Surrey County Council’s Feet First: Walking Training programme. This is a practical road safety course designed to help children develop the skills and confidence they need to walk safely in their local community.
The training is delivered by specially trained Walking Instructors and includes:
Digital learning modules completed in school
Classroom lessons led by teachers
Practical roadside training sessions
Activities to complete at home with parents and carers
Through the programme, children will learn:
The Green Cross Code
How to use pedestrian crossings safely
How to recognise safer and less safe places to cross
How to cross safely between parked cars
The importance and benefits of walking and active travel
