MFL

‘To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.’ Chinese Proverb.

At Hatchlands, we follow the Kapow scheme of work which aims to instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures. We believe that learning languages opens a door to exploring other cultures whilst developing the values of respect and compassion for different members of our community. It is our intention that children will develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French and in turn, develop their curiosity and courage to explore other countries and languages. The teaching of French in KS2 will develop responsible children who engage with and continue language learning in secondary school. Through our scheme of work, we aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing a strong understanding of the English language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.

Children will learn about:

  • The similarities and differences between customs and traditions in France and the UK.

  • French stories, songs, poems and rhymes.

  • Different French-speaking countries

  • The currency used in France

  • Popular French sport and playground games

Children will learn how to:

  • Speak and communicate in French with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity e.g. ordering typical French food and drink.

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding through their responses

  • Write in French for different purposes

  • Read carefully and show understanding of a range of words, phrases and simple writing
