Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.

At Hatchlands, our curriculum, in line with the 2014 National Curriculum, aims to develop the key skills of:
fluency so that all children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
problem solving so that all children can apply their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios
mathematical reasoning so that they can follow a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language
so that children can…
move fluently between different representations of mathematical ideas
make rich connections across mathematical ideas
develop their fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophistical problems
apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects
have an appreciation of number and number operations
be efficient, fluent and accurate with their mental calculations and written procedures
At Hatchlands, we believe that mathematics is a form of communication: a language in its own right. We aim for children to have a firm grasp of that language, and be able to manipulate and grapple with it to understand, challenge, and create.
Maths has the ability to challenge and change the world. We want all pupils at Hatchlands Primary School to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding. At Hatchlands, we foster a growth mindset in Maths, and we promote the fact that Maths is for everyone, regardless of prior knowledge and experience. We believe all children can achieve in Mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable small steps.
