“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”  John F. Kennedy

At Hatchlands, it is our intention, in line with the National Curriculum, to offer all our children a high-quality physical education that engages and inspires them to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. Equipping them to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. By providing opportunities to compete in sport and other activities, we build character and help to embed our school values (courage, compassion, respect and responsibility).

    Children will learn about:
    • running, jumping, throwing and catching, in isolation and in combination

    • balance, agility, flexibility, strength, control and coordination; applying these in a range of activities

    • participate in competitive team games (modified where appropriate) applying basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

    • performing dances using a range of movements

    • gymnastics by developing balance, flexibility, strength and coordination through controlled movements, shapes and simple sequences.

    • swimming competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively

    • safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

    • outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.

    Children will learn how to:
    • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvements to achieve their personal best

    • support their body by eating healthy

    • exercise safely by warming up and cooling down

    • collaborate with team members

    • communicate effectively with peers, staff and coaches

    • win and lose with dignity and respect.
