At Hatchlands, our curriculum, ethos and daily practice are underpinned by our core values of Compassion, Responsibility, Courage and Respect. Through our teaching, learning and wider school life, we actively promote tolerance, understanding and respect for all, celebrating the diversity of our school community and the wider world.
We believe it is our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain, helping them to become confident, thoughtful and responsible citizens who feel a strong sense of belonging while valuing difference. British Values are woven through our curriculum, assemblies, behaviour expectations and opportunities for pupil leadership.
The Department for Education requires schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. At Hatchlands, these values are embedded in the following ways:
Children are given regular opportunities for their voices to be heard and valued. We promote democratic processes through pupil leadership roles, such as house captains and pupil voice groups, where children are involved in decision-making, discussions and planning events. Children learn that their views matter and that listening to others is an important part of democratic life.
The importance of rules and laws is consistently reinforced through classroom expectations, school behaviour systems and assemblies. Children learn why rules exist, how they protect everyone and the consequences when they are not followed. Through discussions, stories and visits from external services such as the police or fire service, pupils gain an age-appropriate understanding of how laws help to keep people safe.
At Hatchlands, children are encouraged to make choices and develop independence within a safe and supportive environment. Through learning opportunities, extracurricular activities and e-safety education, children are supported to understand their rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms, and how to exercise these safely and respectfully.
Respect is at the heart of everything we do. Children learn that their actions affect both themselves and others, and that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and kindly. Our behaviour expectations, classroom routines and assemblies reinforce mutual respect, while staff model this consistently. Achievement and positive behaviour are celebrated across the school, helping children to develop confidence and self-worth.
We actively promote understanding and appreciation of diversity through our curriculum, assemblies and school events. Children learn about a range of faiths, cultures and traditions through RE, PSHE and wider learning experiences, developing respect for beliefs and practices that may be different from their own. Where possible, learning is enhanced through visitors, celebrations and experiences that reflect the rich diversity of life in Britain today.
At Hatchlands, we are committed to helping children understand Britain’s shared values and heritage, while ensuring that every child feels valued for who they are. By promoting British Values alongside our school values, we support children to grow into respectful, open-minded and confident members of society.
