English lies at the heart of our curriculum with our book-based approach to writing. We are passionate about children having exposure to a wide breadth of rich literature that generates an interest in and love for writing, giving them access to the language, vocabulary and tools needed to write creatively and effectively.  Through our engaging curriculum, we aspire to all pupils recognising themselves as writers who are confident in using written language to communicate for a range of audiences and purposes. Writing offers unique opportunities for children to learn about the world around them, discuss and debate their modern world and understand how we can learn from the positive characters demonstrated by the individuals they meet. By matching writing topics to our wider curriculum, children will have immediate opportunities to share their learning and reinforce links between subject content. We use Colourful Semantics to support all learners in writing by providing clear sentence structures that can be replicated.

Children will learn about:

• A range of genres, identifying their purpose and relevance to the audience they are writing

• A range of authors and how they manipulate language and structure to make their writing engaging

• Writing as a way to convey and evoke emotions and feelings in others

• Why writing is widely celebrated with the opportunity to celebrate their own work

Children will learn how:

• To write for a range of purposes

• We can communicate through various written forms

• To write legibly in a cursive style

• To apply a range of spelling patterns in their writing

• To include a range of grammatical structures suitable to the purpose of their piece

• To present their work in a range of different layouts

• To edit and publish work, casting a critical eye over what they have written
